Corpo de Baile
Monica Salmaso presents cd “Corpo de Baile”.
Conceived around 14 songs composed in partnership by Guinga and Paulo Cesar Pinheiro, several of them not recorded before and several kept for 40 years, the project goes in the opposite direction, bringing together a wide range of musicians and arrangers.
“To offer songs of this density, I thought we needed to color the repertoire with different arrangers, so that no song would run over the other,” says Monica.
“We chose a range of colors, inviting Dori Caymmi, Tiago Costa, Nailor Azevedo Proveta, Teco Cardoso, Luca Rael and Nelson Ayres and Paul Aragão to sign the arrangements.
Curiously, at a time when new albums have small teams, I chose to record the most “stuffed” cd of my career, concluded the singer from São Paulo.
Among the songs we chose, “Bolero de Satã”, recorded by Elis Regina in her c d “Essa Mulher” is the most well known among the songs that had already been recorded. “I figured that it was the case to the rerecord ‘Bolero Satã’ to place the partnership within what people had already heard,” points out Monica, who tells us that although the songs had been recorded before, they were recorded in cds that were not so popular, LPs and special editions.
“Corpo de Baile” was directed by Monica and Teco Cardoso (who signs the produçtion).
Very special musicians who play instruments like guitar, hillbilly viola, piano, strings, clarinet, wind band including trombone, trumpet, horn and tuba, acoustic bass and percussion were chosen.
The group Sujeito a Guincho (clarinet quintet) and Carlos Gomes (string quartet) also participate in the album, which was recorded in the old fashioned way: “We played together the most we could, which is another feature of this album. The people met in the studio, everyone together, the old fashioned way??, as if “celebrating” making music together. “
The partnership of Guinga and Paulo Cesar Pinheiro is, for Monica, a rare treasure and a challenge for any singer. “This repertoire is a gift for any singer who likes melody, lyrics, harmony. That’s why Corpo de Baile is a very important album for me. It’s as if I was getting ready to record it all these years, without knowing it, “concluded Monica.
