Canto Sedutor
There is a deeper-rooted Brazil that sprouts from Dori Caymmi and Mônica Salmaso’s music. Birds, rivers, the sea, wilderness, a sky filled with stars. Guimarães, Jobins, Arys, Caymmis, Pinheiros. From the faraway places to the poetry in the cities. The Brazilian people. The love for music. At some moment, these waters were bound to cross into a record. Thus, Canto Sedutor (Seductive Singing) was born, a Biscoito Fino release that puts together Mônica Salmaso and Dori Caymmi, who wrote all the songs in a partnership with Paulo César Pinheiro. Dori defines the bridge that brings them all together: “It’s Brazil. Our work has tradition and also novelty, but it’s always Brazil”.
The idea of making Canto Sedutor came about during the pandemic, when Mônica invited Dori to participate on her live project ‘Ô de Casas’, sharing ‘História Antiga’. The result was so good that it led to three other performances for the series. It was the impulse Mônica needed to express her will to do this project. “Seeing our voices together is an old dream of ime. Dori’s music is a true reference to generations of singers, musicians and songwriters. I’m one of them. I made this proposal, recording an album together, with one condition, that he should sing as well”, celebrates Mônica. After he accepted, the execution was very swift: the recording sessions happened between October 8th and 12th, 2021, in São Paulo, at Monteverdi studio.
The meeting between Dori and Mônica celebrates the mutual admiration they have for each other. “I would feel very happy if someone acknowledged me as a leaf from those trees that are Dorival and Dori Caymmi. Dori is a master. Every note that is written in an arrangement is there in a correct and wise way. Besides, there is that completely personal guitar, the voice that sounds like a father, like earth. Music lives inside him and he offers it with immense seriousness and beauty. I am deeply touched by it”, says Mônica. “What really instigated me and that’s been going on for some time, is the beauty in Mônica Salmaso’s singing. What called me to do this work is the wonderful singer that she is”, Dori affirms.
Canto Sedutor is a love letter to the country. “The Brazil that lives in Dori’s music is what thrills me. It’s this Brazil that, at this moment, is the most broken, which makes it all the more imperative that we sing it and reaffirm it”, Mônica continues. “It’s an extremely Brazilian record. This Brazil comes from the tradition of a certain popular music in our country. Not all that popular, but Brazilian music. The one that comes from the generation of Ary, Noel and Pixinguinha, the one that comes from Chiquinha Gonzaga and so many others. It’s the Brazil I always think about and I will die thinking about”, Dori concludes.
